Support at Home Meals

Introducing our Healthy Aging meal range

At We Feed You, we’re widely known for our expertise in feeding people with special dietary requirements – including gluten free, dairy free and low FODMAP ready meals. Our newest category of meals recognises the unique nutrition needs of older Australians.

These meals have been specifically selected as they provide particular nutrients and food groups important for older Australians, consistent with current research and best practice guidelines in Aged Care.

We Feed You works with Accredited Practising Dietitians who apply evidence-based nutrition to develop the criteria for our meal categories. A special thanks to Marnie Nitschke for developing our Healthy Ageing range of meals.

At We Feed You, we believe that older Australians deserve meals with exceptional taste, texture and satisfaction – not just the right nutrients.  We are proud to present a range of nutritious ready meals for older people at home, that tick all these boxes equally.

We Feed You Healthy Aging range of meals is modelled on the Australian Dietary Guidelines with particular attention to the needs of older Australians.  In addition, our criteria is that these meals all provide:

·       A good source of protein

·       A good source of fibre

·       At least 1.5 serves of vegetables (with many containing as many as 4!)

·       Salt / sodium levels below 400mg/100g

( +/- 10% margin is applied, to allow for slight variations due to the hand-made nature of our meals).

Please head here, for more in depth information about the Dietary Guidelines for Older Australians, including suggested serves per day for different food groups.

Dietitian approved:  We have reviews of our meals, criteria and customer feedback from our experienced Accredited Practising Dietitian. So you can be assured we are always striving to provide the best nutrition in the tastiest package for older Australians.

We Feed You can’t be everything to everyone, so we’d like to be transparent about what the Healthy Aging range doesn’t provide:

We Feed You meals are a tasty and convenient source of nutrition that can help you meet your requirements, but being just one meal, they are not intended to provide 100% of your nutrition needs.  For this reason, it is important to eat at least 3 meals daily, with a variety of foods from the different food groups.

Whilst some of the meals in our Healthy Aging range are suitable for texture modified diets (e.g. slow cooked meats being soft and moist), We Feed You do not offer texture modified meals for dysphagia such as minced moist, puree and thickened fluids.

We’d love you to know that other We Feed You meals outside of the Healthy Aging range are also nutritious and delicious options for older Australians. We don’t add preservatives or use gloopy sauces and fillers to bulk out our meals, so what you see on the label, is what you’ll taste and enjoy.  A lot like home cooked – without the shopping, cooking and tidying up!

What nutrients are of particular importance for older Australians, and which foods are good sources?

Older people (aged 65 years and over) have unique dietary needs compared to the general population – including higher needs for protein, calcium and vitamins B6 and D.

Protein:

Protein is essential for maintaining muscles (which translates to better strength and balance).  Protein is also an important nutrient for strong bones and a good immune system.  Older Australians should be eating a variety of protein sources over the day.

Good protein sources include:

·       Lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy products. These foods are considered high quality or ‘complete’ protein because they contain all essential amino acids.

·       Plant proteins are also very nutritious – including beans and legumes (e.g. chick peas, lentils, kidney beans), tofu, tempeh, nuts and seeds.

A standard serve of protein = 65g cooked lean meat, or 80g cooked chicken, or 100g cooked fish, or 2 eggs, or 1 cup of chick peas or 30g nuts/seeds.

Between 2 – 2 ½ servings per day is the recommended amount for those 70 years and older.

Dietary Fibre:

With age, our digestive system can become sluggish, which can put older Australians at a higher risk of constipation and related problems like haemorrhoids and diverticulitis.  Eating enough fibre and drinking enough fluids - as well as keeping physically active – are important strategies to support optimal bowel health and function.

Most adults need between 25-30g of fibre daily, and that can be difficult to reach, if there is limited access to fresh fruit and vegetables, problems with dentition or a lack of appetite. This is why we’ve included fibre as a key parameter in our Healthy Aging meals category.

Fibre is found in plant foods, and good foods to try to include daily include:

·       Whole grains like oats, seedy breads, brown rice

·       Fruit, vegetables and legumes

·       Nuts and seeds

Calcium:

Most of us know that calcium is important for strong bones.  Eating enough calcium (through food and supplements) is especially important for older Australians. Not getting enough can put you at a higher risk of osteoporosis, bone breaks and related health complications.

Good calcium sources:

Milk and milk products like yoghurt and cheese are the best and most easily absorbed sources of calcium – and they also contain valuable protein. Plant based dairy alternatives like soy milk (fortified with at least 100mg calcium/100mL) are good options if you don’t include dairy.  We also find some calcium in foods like firm tofu, green leafy vegetables, fish with edible bones, and nuts and seeds.

A standard serve of dairy / alternatives = 1 cup milk, 2 slices (40g) hard cheese, ¾ cup yoghurt, 60g sardines or 100g firm tofu.

Older Australians are recommended to eat 3 ½ - 4 servings per day from the dairy and alternatives group above.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is important for older Australians because it supports many different parts of our health, including bone health, muscle strength, our immune function and our mood and brain health.  We know that older people are at higher risk of vitamin D deficiency, due to a number of different factors.

The main source of Vitamin D made is the type we make in our skin when it is exposed to sunlight.

Vitamin D is also found in some foods like fatty fish, egg yolks, and fortified food products, however as we get older, our absorption of vitamin D and other nutrients reduces.

Rather than relying on food for Vitamin D, older Australians should have their levels tested regularly  with their GP, and take a supplement in the recommended dose, to maintain optimal Vitamin D status.

Vitamin B6

Just like Vitamin D, B6 has many different roles in our health, including our brain, energy levels, heart health and immune system. Older Australians can have higher B6 requirements due to digestive changes and medication interactions.

B6 is found in a variety of foods, including fish and poultry, nuts, legumes, bananas and starchy vegetables like potato. There are no set serves/day for this nutrient.

B6 supplements may be needed, especially if you have a small appetite and are not able to eat a wide variety of nutritious foods.  Your GP can test your B6 levels, to determine whether a supplement is needed.
