)What’s Actually in Our Beef Rogan Josh?
If you’ve ever turned a ready-made meal over and wondered what half the ingredients actually are, you’re not alone. Have you been surprised at what you read? Long list of ingredients that you don't understand, numbers and flavour enhancers or fillers.
At We Feed You, we believe transparency matters. Especially for people who read labels, care about nutrition, and want to know what they’re eating.
So today, we’re doing something simple.
We’re breaking down one of our most popular meals: Beef Rogan Josh - ingredient by ingredient, and explaining exactly why each one is there.
No food secrets. Just real food.
Protein That Does the Work: Lean Beef
Our free range, grass fed beef is chosen for both nutrition and flavour. It provides high-quality protein and iron, supporting energy levels, muscle repair, and lasting fullness.
With 35.8g of protein in this meal, beef is used intentionally as its highly bioavailable, meaning your body can digest and absorb it efficiently. You get more usable protein per serve compared to many plant-based sources.
We select cuts of meat that respond well to slow cooking, resulting in beef that’s tender, satisfying, and rich in flavour - without the need for additives or tenderisers.

Carbohydrate: Basmati Rice
We use basmati rice in many of our meals because it has a lower glycaemic index (GI) compared to most standard white rice varieties. It’s also naturally aromatic, easier to digest than many refined carbohydrates, delivers steady energy without heaviness and helps avoid sharp energy spikes and crashes.
This makes basmati rice a good option for people managing gut health, energy levels, appetite, or blood sugar.

We Feed You Basmati Rice can also be purchased as a share pack for two people. It goes beautifully with our Beef Rogan Josh share pack.
Vegetables & Fresh Herbs for Function
Our Beef Rogan Josh includes brown onion, potato, carrot, spring onion, garlic, ginger and peas - not just to tick a nutritional box, but to build texture, flavour and nourishment naturally.
These ingredients provide fibre, essential micronutrients, and natural sweetness, allowing us to avoid unnecessary additives, thickeners, or flavourings.
Dairy Used With Purpose: Natural Yoghurt
We use natural yoghurt (pasteurised cow’s milk with live cultures) to balance spices, add a healthy creaminess, and support gut health.
- No gums.
- No starches.
- No fillers.
Just dairy doing what it’s meant to do.
Whole Spices: Warming, Intentional, Real

Every spice in this meal plays a role in flavour, aroma, digestion, or warmth.
Our blend includes cumin, coriander, smoked paprika, turmeric, fenugreek leaves, garam masala, cardamom, cloves, bay leaves, cinnamon, cayenne, and black pepper.
These aren’t artificial “flavourings”. They’re whole spices, used the way they would be in a home kitchen.
Peanuts
We include peanuts for both nutrition and texture. Nutritionally, peanuts provide plant-based protein, healthy unsaturated fats, and fibre, which help support satiety and sustained energy. They also contribute important micronutrients and from a ready meal perspective, peanuts add natural richness and a subtle crunch, creating contrast and depth of texture without relying on artificial thickeners or flavour enhancers.
What You Won’t Find in This Meal
-
No artificial flavours

Now lets compare this to another ready meal brand.
When you compare ingredient lists, the difference becomes clear. Alongside some real ingredients, many mass-market ready meals rely on a long list of additives, stabilisers, thickeners, flavour enhancers, and modified starches. These ingredients are commonly used in large-scale manufacturing to standardise texture, extend shelf life, and compensate for processes that prioritise speed and consistency over cooking.
This approach reflects meals designed to be engineered for scale, not cooked by chefs relying on real ingredients, technique, and time.
Example ingredients included in mass-produced ready meals:
Meal 1 includes:
Stabiliser (415), acidity regulators (260, 327, 451, 450), thickeners (407, 412), flavour enhancer (635), maltodextrin (from maize), and colour (caramel IV).
Meal 2 includes:
Thickener (1422), emulsifier (472e), vegetable gums (415, 407), acid (330), antioxidant (300), anti-caking agent, acidity regulators (327, 451, 450), thickeners (407, 412), and modified starch (1422).
Meal 3: includes
Wheat Starch (often used as a thickener), Maize Starch (also used to thicken or improve mouth feel), Mineral Salts (450, 500), Tapioca Dextrin (also commonly used to improve texture), Flavours, Vegetable Shortening (a highly processed fat used to improve mouth feel), Wheat Gluten (help foods hold it's shape), Malt Extract, Yeast Extract (used to Boost savoury flavour), Dextrose, Acidity Regulator (330), Thickeners (1412, 415), Glucose, Salt, Acidity Regulators (260, 330), Preservative (202), Natural Colour (160b)),
What's most concerning is not all ingredients are actually listed. For example when you see the "Booster" or Chicken Stock in the ingredients list but the contents are not actually listed, it's highly likely they contain even more flavour enhancers, acidity regulators and/or colours.
Some of these ingredients may sound familiar, and in certain forms they can appear in everyday kitchen items such as red wine vinegar, Worcestershire sauce or tomato paste. The difference lies in how and why they are used.
When added for industrial processing purposes, these ingredients aren’t there to enhance nutrition. Instead, they’re used to control texture, appearance, flavour, shelf stability, and consistency at scale - a challenge with fresh ready meals compared to frozen. As our chef Dave says, "freezing is natural method of preserving food which has been used for centuries. It's the best and most natural form of preserving food without tampering with it."
Our approach is different
At We Feed You, flavour and texture come from real ingredients, proper cooking, and natural freezing, not from functional additives designed to engineer the eating experience.
Our meals are made by real chefs, using vegetables, proteins, spices, and fats intentionally, rather than relying on additives to do the heavy lifting.
That’s the difference between meals built in a factory and meals cooked properly.
Ready meals - but better.
