Delicious and Safe: Your Guide to Gluten-Free Home-Delivered Meals

... in VIC, NSW, QLD and the ACT

A coeliac diagnosis, or the decision to live gluten free for your health, can feel overwhelming, confusing, and isolating all at once. Knowing what to eat, what to trust, and where to find it is a real and daily challenge, whether you are in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, or the ACT.

The good news is that Australia holds food manufacturers to the highest gluten-free standard in the world. Schedule 4 of the Food Standards Code stipulates that to justify a gluten-free claim, a product must contain no detectable gluten. If a food product contains even a small amount of detectable gluten, making a gluten-free claim would be in breach of the Food Standards Code.

That means when you see the words gluten free on an Australian product, the law requires them to mean it. It is also why some brands use "low gluten" rather than "gluten free" - a separate and lower standard under the Food Standards Code that permits up to 200ppm of gluten.

For someone with Coeliac Disease, the two terms are not interchangeable. Getting it wrong is not a minor inconvenience - it is a health event. Gluten causes real, measurable damage to the coeliac gut, and no amount is safe. What you are looking for goes beyond food. It is confidence. It is safety. It is the peace of mind that comes from a brand that understands this, and takes its responsibility to the coeliac community seriously.

Coeliac Australia confirms that creative terms such as "no added gluten", "gluten friendly", "gluten removed", "coeliac friendly", or "99% gluten free" are not permitted under the Code. A gluten-free claim also cannot be accompanied by any cross-contact statement, including:

  • May contain traces of gluten
  • May be present: gluten
  • Made in a facility that also processes gluten
  • Made with equipment also used to process gluten

According to FSANZ, "all representations made about food are subject to fair trading laws and food laws in Australia and New Zealand which prohibit false, misleading or deceptive representations." Brands displaying a gluten-free claim alongside any of the above statements - without independent testing to verify no detectable gluten is present - are not only at risk of breaching the Food Standards Code, but also at real risk of action under Australian Consumer Law.

A good example of a brand doing it right is Cobs Popcorn with all products gluten free and testing to show gluten not detected on their packaging. A tick of confidence for coeliacs.

The Hidden Dangers

A gluten free claim is so important for someone with coeliac disease, as even tiny amounts of gluten can trigger an immune response. The villi - tiny finger-like projections lining the small intestine, become inflamed and flattened (known as villous atrophy), reducing the body's ability to absorb essential nutrients.  The consequences go well beyond digestive discomfort.

Short-term effects may include:
  • Bloating & cramps
  • Diarrhoea or constipation
  • Nausea & vomiting
  • Fatigue & brain fog
  • Headaches
  • Skin rashes
Long-term consequences may include:
  • Intestinal damage
  • Nutrient malabsorption
  • Anaemia & osteoporosis
  • Infertility & miscarriage
  • Liver disease
  • Increased cancer risk

For someone with Coeliac Disease, eating strictly gluten free isn't a preference - it's a medical necessity.

That's why every decision we make at We Feed You starts there. Our kitchen and all equipment is dedicated gluten free. No product containing gluten ever crosses our door. Our meals are independently tested by an approved laboratory to confirm no detectable gluten is present.

When our packaging says gluten free, we mean it. On every We Feed You product, gluten is listed on the Nutrition Information Panel with ND - no detectable gluten - declared. This is best practice, and any reputable brand making a gluten-free claim should be able to say the same.

So when you shop, check the panel. If a brand carries a gluten-free claim but cannot show gluten ND on their Nutrition Information Panel, don't hesitate to ask them why. The gluten-free community deserves nothing less than full transparency.

Gluten is a master of disguise. It lurks in ingredients, additives, and food categories that have no obvious connection to wheat, and it can creep into the tiniest crevices of shared equipment - making cross-contamination a very real and hidden risk for anyone with Coeliac Disease.

Some of the most common hidden sources include:

Wheat-Based Thickeners

Soups, sauces and gravies frequently use wheat flour as a thickener, particularly in creamy sauces and pre-prepared meals found in the supermarket or even in restaurants.

Malt Ingredients

Malt flavouring, malt extract and malt vinegar are derived from barley and are not gluten-free. These ingredients are commonly found in sauces, cereals, dressings and snack foods.

The “Wheat-Free” Misconception

Many people assume “wheat-free” means “gluten-free” - but that’s not always true. A product may still contain barley, rye or contaminated oats.

Processed Additives and Coatings

Even foods that seem naturally gluten-free, such as frozen chips or wedges, may contain gluten-based coatings, flavourings or stabilisers.

Cross-Contamination

Cross-contamination is one of the most serious and least understood risks for people with Coeliac Disease. When food is processed or prepared in shared environments or on shared equipment, gluten can transfer - not just through direct contact, but through the air itself, settling into small crevices that are nearly impossible to fully clean. It's why most coeliacs keep their own dedicated toaster at home, and many go a step further with their own cookware.

A new diagnosis can feel overwhelming. Suddenly, every meal, every label, and every kitchen surface requires careful thought. It's no surprise that many people newly diagnosed with Coeliac Disease look for ready-made solutions that give them peace of mind while they find their footing, understand their new dietary needs, and begin the important work of restoring their gut health.

Why Choosing the Brands Matters

For people living gluten-free, convenience should never come at the expense of safety.

A trusted brand should:

  • Clearly list all ingredients with gluten not detected in the NIP
  • Understand cross-contamination risks
  • Avoid hidden gluten sources
  • Prioritise safe preparation processes.

This is where the nutrition information panel become incredibly valuable.

Carmen's, a fellow Australian brand have a great range of gluten free muesli bars with gluten not detected in the nutrition information panel.
