Does irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) impact your life? Many people with gut issues, like IBS, associate symptoms with intake of food or drink. The 6-week Body and Brain in IBS Study at Monash University is aiming to investigate these connections using fibre drinks. The research team need people from the Melbourne area to take part. Participants will be reimbursed for their time with a $250 gift card.
Who is eligible? You may be eligible to participate if you:
- Have had IBS diagnosed by a GP or gastroenterologist
- Are willing to come to the Alfred Centre in Melbourne for one study visit (approx. 1.5 hrs)
- Are familiar with FODMAPs and fructans
How are we doing this study?
Monash are recruiting 20 adults with IBS who have mild to moderate gut symptoms.
Participants will need to consume test drinks, some of which contain a fibre called fructans. Other test drinks will not contain fructans.

- Consume different types of test drinks at home approximately three days each week for 5 weeks
- Collect breath sample once weekly for 5 weeks.
- Keep track of gut and mental health symptoms and food intake
- Attend one in-person study visit
This study is approved by the Monash University Research Ethics Committee (Project ID 45563).
